Narrative
When maple syrup farmer Ruth Landry discovers her livelihood is being attacked by greedy competitors who were once her friends, she hatches a scheme to get revenge and shake up the industry. Undoubtedly based on the 2011-2012 theft of $18 million worth of maple syrup from a storage facility in Quebec; five people were sentenced to prison. In rural Quebec, Ruth Landry (Margo Martindale) struggles to keep her maple farm afloat while her husband lies in a coma.
Fargo is strong in this group
tries to steal his fortune on the cheap. Remy Bouchard (Guillaume Cyr) is a disgruntled, lonely security guard at the association’s warehouse. Mike Byrne (Chris Diamantopoulos) is a low-level bagman with a Boston mob family.
The credit is due
Like that franchise, this could have been a movie or a TV show. It also has snow, quirky criminals and small-town residents, and even a true/false story. The cast is led by the greatness of Margo Martindale and the slightly off-kilter Chris Diamantopoulos.
It takes some getting used to
Two things bothered me at first, and they held me back a bit. The story is inherently silly, and I’m not sure Fargo’s treatment is worth it. The other problem is the language barrier.
Despite the slow start, the show leaves me wanting more
